The
Pilkem ridge lies to the north-east of Ypres; an area that
was contested in 1914, 1915 and 1917. Goumier
Farm blockhouse still stands, one of several large
German constructions in this area. It was an objective of
153rd Brigade of 51st (Highland) Division on 31 July 1917,
and fell to the 1/6th Black Watch. Despite being registered
by every German gun, it proved to be a useful shelter and
landmark for the tens of thousands of men who would pass
this way as the line slogged its way up to Langemarck and
beyond. |
