Cambrai

The military plot in the centre of Porte de Paris Communal Cemetery in Cambrai contains the graves of many brave Frenchmen who died in the early weeks of the war. 113 soldiers of the British Army are buried here too, including some from as early as 26th August 1914. Units of II Corps passed close by to the East during the first days of the retreat. Cambrai remained behind German lines until late 1918, and the majority of the men here died in captivity - most in 1916, after capture on the Somme.

To a scene of gallant defence, at Néry
