This Regiment had no battalions of the regular army.

Territorial Force
1/1st Battalion

August 1914 : in Newport. Part of Welsh Border Brigade, Welsh Division.
February 1915 : left the Division and moved to France.
13 February 1915 : attached to 84th Brigade, 28th Division.
27 May 1915 : amalgamated with the 1/2nd and 1/3rd Bns, after all suffered heavy casualties.
Resumed identity on 11 August 1915.
3 September 1915 : transferred as Pioneers to 46th Division.


1/2nd Battalion
August 1914 : in Pontypool. Part of Welsh Border Brigade, Welsh Division.
November 1914 : left the Division and moved to France.
20 November 1914 : attached to 12th Brigade, 4th Division.
27 May 1915 : amalgamated with the 1/1st and 1/3rd Bns after all suffered heavy casualties.
Resumed identity on 11 August 1915.
30 January 1916 : moved to Lines of Communication.
1 May 1916 : transferred as Pioneers to 29th Division.

1/3rd Battalion
August 1914 : in Abergavenny. Part of Welsh Border Brigade, Welsh Division.
February 1915 : left the Division and moved to France.
3 March 1915 : attached to 83rd Brigade, 28th Division.
27 May 1915 : amalgamated with the 1/1st and 1/2nd Bns after all suffered heavy casualties.
Resumed identity on 11 August 1915.
2 September 1915 : transferred to 49th Division, becoming Divisional Pioneers on 18 September.
9 August 1916 : transferred to GHQ Troops.
31 August 1916 : disbanded in France.

2/1st Battalion
Formed in Newport in September 1914.
19 April 1915 : attached to 205th Brigade, 68th Division.
Remained in UK until disbanded on 31 March 1918.

2/2nd Battalion
Formed in Pontypool in September 1914.
19 April 1915 : attached to 205th Brigade, 68th Division.
Remained in UK until disbanded on 20 April 1918.

2/3rd Battalion
Formed in Abergavenny in September 1914.
19 April 1915 : attached to 205th Brigade, 68th Division.
Remained in UK until disbanded in August 1917.

3/1st to 3/3rd Battalions
Formed at home stations in February 1915.
8 April 1916 : became Reserve Bns.
1 September 1916 : 1st absorbed the 2nd and 3rd Bns, part of the Welsh Reserve Brigade.
10 July 1917 : absorbed the 1st Reserve Brecknock Bn of the South Wales Borderers.
Remained in UK throughout the war.

4th Battalion
1 January 1917, the 48th Provisional Bn became 4th Monmouths. The 4th had been formed from Home Service personnel from the TF Bns of the Monmouths and Herefordshire Regiment. Remained in UK throughout the war.
Other battalions

This Regiment formed no battalions of the New Armies or any other units.
