3/1st Battalion

Formed January 1915. By April 1915, in 3/1st London Brigade. May 1915 : transferred to 173rd Brigade, 58th Division. June 1916 : became 2/1st Bn, when original was disbanded. 6 February 1918 : disbanded in France.


3/2nd Battalion
Formed December 1914. By April 1915, in 3/1st London Brigade. May 1915 : transferred to 173rd Brigade, 58th Division. June 1916 : became 2/2nd Bn, when original was disbanded.

3/3rd Battalion
Formed January 1915. By April 1915, in 3/1st London Brigade. May 1915 : transferred to 173rd Brigade, 58th Division. June 1916 : became 2/3rd Bn, when original was disbanded. 6 February 1918 : disbanded in France.

3/4th Battalion
Formed in Hoxton in January 1915. By April 1915, in 3/1st London Brigade. May 1915 : transferred to 173rd Brigade, 58th Division. June 1916 : became 2/4th Bn, when original was disbanded. 12 September 1918 : disbanded in France.

3/5th to 3/12th Battalions
Formed in November 1914 (5th), and early 1915 (others). Became Reserve Bns in April 1916. Remained in England throughout the war. On 1 September 1916, the 11th and 12th were absorbed by the 9th Bn, and the 10th absorbed the 25th Reserve Cyclist Bn.

3/13th to 3/27th Battalions
Formed in late 1914 and early 1915. All remained in England throughout the war after becoming Reserve Bns in April 1915, except 23rd and 24th, which were absorbed by 21st and 22nd respectively in September 1916. The 25th was similarly absorbed by the 3/10th Bn.

3/28th Battalion
Formed in September 1914, this Bn was renamed 2/28th when the original became the 1/28th, in November 1914. Subsequently the newly-named 2/28th became an Officer Cadet Battalion. Based in Romford throughout the war, it trained 10,256 officers, who went to all of the Guards and Line infantry regiments, the Royal Regiment of Artillery, and most of the other army Corps.

4/1st to 4/4th Battalions
Formed in May 1915 when the 3rd-Line Bns went to 173rd Brigade, 58th Division. All became Reserve Bns in April 1916. In September 1916, the 2nd and 4th were absorbed by the 1st and 3rd respectively. Remained in England throughout the war.
