1st Battalion

August 1914 : in Ambala, India. Part of the Sirhind Brigade, the 3rd (Lahore) Division.

Moved to France via Egypt, landing at Marseilles 1 December 1914 (some weeks after the other Brigades of the Division).

Moved to Mesopotamia December 1915.

January 1917 left the Division and moved to the Tigris Defences.

September 1917 : attached to 51st Brigade, 17th Indian Division in Mesopotamia, where it then remained.


2nd Battalion

August 1914 : in Aldershot. Part of 5th Brigade, 2nd Division.


3rd (Reserve) Battalion
August 1914 : in Haddington. Remained in UK throughout the war.

4th (Extra Reserve) Battalion
August 1914 : in Hamilton. Remained in UK throughout the war.

August 1914 : in Lanark. Part of Lothian Brigade, Scottish Coast Defences. Disbanded May 1916.

1/9th Battalion (Glasgow Highland)

August 1914 : in Glasgow. Part of HLI Brigade, Lowland Division.

November 1914 : left the Division and moved to France, landing 5 November.

November 1914 : attached to 5th Brigade, 2nd Division.

30 January 1916 : left Division and transferred to GHQ Troops.

29 May 1916 : transferred to 100th Brigade, 33rd Division.


2/5th Battalion (City of Glasgow)

Formed in Glasgow in September 1914.

January 1915 : attached to 196th Brigade, 65th Division.

November 1915 - January 1916 temporarily became 21st Bn.

March 1918 : Division broken up. Bn disbanded by May 1918.


2/6th Battalion (City of Glasgow)

Formed in Glasgow in September 1914.

January 1915 : attached to 196th Brigade, 65th Division.

November 1915 - January 1916 temporarily became 22nd Bn.

March 1918 : Division broken up. Bn disbanded by May 1918.


2/7th Battalion (Blythswood)

Formed in Glasgow in September 1914.

January 1915 : attached to 196th Brigade, 65th Division.

November 1915 - January 1916 temporarily became 23rd Bn. Bn disbanded by end of 1917.


3/4th to 3/9th Battalions
Formed at home stations in March 1915. Became Reserve Bns in April 1916. Eventually 5th had absorbed all others. All remained in UK.

21st Battalion
1 January 1917, the 9th Provisional Bn became 21st HLI.. The 9th was formed from Home Service personnel from the TF Bns of the regiment. Remained in UK throughout the war.

1 February 1918 : transferred to 119th Brigade, 40th Division.

16 February 1918 : transferred to 120th Brigade, 40th Division.

6 May 1918 : reduced to cadre strength.

3 June 1918 : transferred to 34th Division.

16 June 1918 : transferred to 43rd Brigade, 14th Division.

21 June 1918 : absorbed the 22nd Bn and became the 10th Bn once again.


11th (Service) Battalion

Formed at Hamilton, August 1914, as part of K1.

10 April 1915 : became a second Reserve battalion (after the 4th Bn).

1 September 1916 : became the 52nd Training Reserve battalion, in 12th Reserve Brigade.


14th (Service) Battalion

Formed at Hamilton in July 1915, as a Bantam Bn.

September 1915 : attached to 120th Brigade, 40th Division.

2 March 1916 : absorbed the 13th Bn, the Scottish Rifles.

Early 1917 : ceased to be a Bantam Bn.

6 May 1918 : reduced to cadre strength.

3 June 1918 : transferred to 34th Division.

17 June 1918 : transferred to 39th Division.

16 August 1918 : transferred to 197th Brigade, 66th Division.


15th (Service) Battalion (1st Glasgow) Glasgow Tramways

Formed in Glasgow on 2 September 1914 by the Lord Provost and City (many recruits coming from the Glasgow Tramways).

May 1915 : attached to 97th Brigade, 32nd Division.

3 January 1916 : transferred to 14th Brigade, 32nd Division.


16th (Service) Battalion (2nd Glasgow) Glasgow Boy's Brigade

Formed in Glasgow on 2 September 1914 by the Lord Provost and City (many recruits coming from the Glasgow Boy's Brigade).

May 1915 : attached to 97th Brigade, 32nd Division.

22 February 1918 : became Pioneer Bn to 32nd Division.


17th (Service) Battalion (3rd Glasgow)

Formed in Glasgow on 10 September 1914 by the Chamber of Commerce.

May 1915 : attached to 97th Brigade, 32nd Division.

11 February 1918 : disbanded in France.


18th (Service) Battalion (4th Glasgow)

Formed in Glasgow on 26 February 1915, as a Bantam Bn, by the Lord Provost and City.

June 1915 : attached to 106th Brigade, 35th Division.

Early 1917 : ceased to be a Bantam Bn.

23 September 1917 : dismounted Glasgow Yeomanry amalgamated and Bn became 18th (Royal GlasgowYeomanry) Bn.


19th and 20th (Reserve) Battalions
Formed at Gailes and Ripon in July and October 1915 respectively, as local reserve bns. 1 September 1916 : became 78th and 79th Training Reserve battalions, in 18th Reserve Brigade.
 
Other Battalions
22nd Battalion
Formed in Deal on 1 June 1918, but absorbed into 10th Bn three weeks later.

1st (Reserve) Garrison Battalion

Formed at Fort George in May 1916. Remained in Scotland throughout the war.

The title misleads, for the HLI was Glasgow's regiment.
