in 1919, the National Roll is a compilation of mini biographies
of soldiers in 14 volumes. The entries were by paid subscription,
with information being provided by the man or his family. Coverage
is very patchy and in many cases the entries are very inaccurate.
However it is nonetheless a useful resource. There are copies at
the library of the National Archives in Kew and at many regional
libraries. The series has been reprinted in recent years by Naval & Miltary
Press. The National Roll volume for Manchester has also been transcribed and is accessible (free) on-line: Manchester Volumes available to buy in electronic format: Military genealogy (pay by the click) On CDROM |
