| This
conference was held in Chantilly, soon after Italy entered the
war on the side of the Allies. It was quite clear to the Allies
that the Western Front was proving a difficult if not impossible
barrier to the defeat of Germany and her allies. With the entry
of Italy, new opportunities began to open up, and France - by
far the most powerful of the Allies militarily at this point -
was determined to take the lead.
Chantilly
is a small town with a very large and impressive chateau, 10 miles
North-East of Paris.
