This conference was held in Chantilly, soon after Italy entered the war on the side of the Allies. It was quite clear to the Allies that the Western Front was proving a difficult if not impossible barrier to the defeat of Germany and her allies. With the entry of Italy, new opportunities began to open up, and France - by far the most powerful of the Allies militarily at this point - was determined to take the lead.

Chantilly is a small town with a very large and impressive chateau, 10 miles North-East of Paris.

Conference dates: 7th July 1915

In attendance:

Great Britain
France
Belgium
Italy and others
  • Field-Marshal Sir John French, Commander-in-Chief
  • Lieut.-General Sir Archibald Murray, CIGS
  • Millerand, Minister of War
  • General Joffre, Commander-in-Chief
  • General Pellé
  • Major-General Wielemans, Sub-Chief of the General Staff
  • Lt-Col. di Breganze, Italian Military Attaché
  • Colonel Stephanovic, Serbian Military Attaché
  • Colonel Ignatiev, Russian Military Attaché

At the Conference, Joffre officially pointed out that concerted action between the Allies would give the most favourable conditions for victory. No specific actions were taken as a result of this Conference, but it had begun to create the general Allied plan for 1916.
