The Long, Long Trail

A Year on the Western Front

pub. The London Stamp Exchange 1988. ISBN 0 948130 22 9

This book is a facsimile reprint of a memorial volume produced by J. Underhill and edited by Sydney Milledge in 1924, and it concerns the military career of Captain Edward Samual Underhill, late of 8th (Service) Battalion, the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment.

Underhill, known as Ted, was born in Croydon in 1895. He attended Whitgift School, where he attended the Officer Training Corps unit.

Enlisting in 1914 in the Universities and Public Schools Brigade, he applied for a commission and was gazetted to the 8th (Service) Battalion, the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment on 22nd September of that year.

Underhill served with the battalion until he was killed in an enemy counter attack at Stuff Redoubt on the Somme, on 12th October, 1916. The book covers the intervening period in great detail, with letters from Ted, comments from fellow officers, etc. There is a number of maps, and a few photographs. Overall, it is a very readable account of the doings of a young regimental officer.

A must for any student of the battalion, the regiment or the 25th Division, and an interesting read for all.

Long out of print, and not easily available, but try www.abebooks.com. Price seems to vary widely, but you should be able to find a copy for less than £20.
