I
usually like the Holt's battlefield guides.
They are invariably nicely produced, full of
maps and photos and
in general they are models of clarity. The
same is true of these works - but I am afraid
that I can not recommend these latest works.
I certainly would not pay the cover price for
them.
Not too long ago, the Holts' produced two splendid
battlefield guides. There is a review of
one on this site. "The Pocket Battlefield Guide"
to the Somme and Ypres are, as far as I can
see, extracts from these works, which are much
better value and far more comprehensive.
I have no doubt that the many tourists passing
through the Channel Ports or on tour coaches
stopping at the Menin Gate or at the Thiepval
Visitor Centre will be tempted, but for anyone
planning a study tour, I recommend the earlier
works or Rose Coombs "Before Endeavours Fade".
My review copies have different covers to
those shown by Amazon.
