War diary 1st to 30th September 1917 covering operations at Tower Hamlets in the Battle of the Menin Road
 

1st - 6th. Company training, at Barbinghem.

7th. No. 3 Section with Lieutenant James and Second Lieutenant Cartmell proceeded to Wizernes to join 238 Machine Gun Company, to proceed with them and one Section 124 Company to Ridge Wood, whence they would repair to the line, to make ready barrage emplacements for forthcoming operations.

8th. 10.30am. OC's conference at Brigade. 2:15pm Divisional horse race meeting.

9th. NCO's and officers visited training ground for practice attack on Monday.

10th. Practice attack.

11th. Company training.

12th. Brigade Field Day as on 10th September. 122 Machine Gun Company supplied enemy machine guns and troops for local enemy counter-attacks.

13th. Company training.

14th. Company moved into billets at La Nieppe.

15th. Company moved to billets at La Roukloshille.

16th. Company moved into Chippewa Camp. No. 2 Section relieved two guns 194 Company and two guns 116 Company in the line.

17th. No. 3 Section rejoined the company from 238 Machine Gun Company.

18th. Numbers 3 and 4 Sections reported at 4pm to 11th Royal West Kents at Ridge Wood and moved in the evening to Larch Wood. The company headquarters moved into Hedge Street Tunnels together with No. 1 Section.

19th. 11pm. No. 4 Section, No. 1 Section, and one sub section No. 3 moved up to assembly position in Bodmin Copse. Assembly complete by 12 midnight. Remaining subsection No. 3 went into reserve in Hedge Street Tunnels. Lieutenant James went sick.

20th. [Battle of the Menin Road] 5.40am. Attack delivered on Tower Hamlets ridge. All sections arrived at final position with only four casualties. 12 noon. Royal West Kents unable to hold on in Green Line owing to their right flank being exposed, withdrew, and Sergeant O'Connor, commanding No. 4 Section, Second Lieutenant Wearne having been wounded, brought forward the two rear guns to cover the gap. He remained in this exposed position to 6pm when he withdrew to the same line as the Royal West Kents.

21st. 4.15am. German counter attack delivered on right and left of Menin Road. The sub section No. 3 was wiped out and both guns destroyed and all of No. 4 section with the exception of six men became casualties, through the heavy bombardment which preceded this counter-attack. Counter-attack were beaten off. Second Lieutenant Hale inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy. Second Lieutenant Cartmell wounded. Reinforcements from reserve subsection sent up to No. 4. 7pm Second counter-attack attempted, which never materialised.

22nd. Situation normal. 122 Infantry Brigade relieved out of the line by 116 Brigade.

23rd. Situation normal. Relief expected but did not turn up.

24th. 1am Relieving Company arrived but owing to heavy shelling no relief was possible until 6.30am. Relief complete by 9am. Company proceeded to Jackson's Dump where limbers were waiting for the guns and then to Ridge Wood. Casualties in the line, 3 officers and 52 other ranks. 2pm Left Ridge Wood by bus for Eecke. Transport followed from Millekruise and arrived in camp 8.30pm.

25th. Cleaning of guns, limbers, and the person. Billeting party left for Wormhoudt.

26th. 11am Inspection by GOC Brigade [Brigadier-General F.W. Towsey]. 2pm Transport left for Wormhoudt.

27th. 6.40am Company embussed for billets in Uxem.

28th. 6.30am Company proceeded by march route into billets at La Panne.

29th. 20 men, one Corporal and four guns complete transferred to 238 Machine Gun Company and left to join Company at Ghyvelde.

30th. Divine Service.
