The Long, Long Trail

A Yeomanry Division

Summary history of the division

The Division was formed at Khan Yunis in Palestine between 20 June and 22 July 1917, composed of the mounted units that had been with the Desert Column of the Egyptan Expeditionary Force.

It took part in the Third Battle of Gaza. On 31 October 1917 it was held in GHQ Reserve for the capture of Beersheba, and then on 6 November 1917 was engaged in the capture of the Sheria Position. On 13-14 November 1917 it fought in the action at El Maghar, and on 17-24 November the Battle of Nabi Samweil. It helped repel Turkish counter attacks during the Turk defence of Jerusalem, 27-29 November 1917.

In April 1918, orders were received that the mounted formations in Egypt and Palestine were to be reorganised, with many Indian units due to arrive. It was redesignated 4th Cavalry Division on 22 July 1918, after a brief designation of 1st Mounted Division between 24 April and 22 July 1918. In April 1918, 6 of the 9 Yeomanry Regiments left and were replaced by Indian units.

This Brigade landed in Egypt on 2 March 1916, and joined 52nd (Lowland) Division. It was twice renumbered in 1916 (briefly being CCLXIII and CCLXIV) but was back to its old number in December 1916.
