The horsed equivalent of the Territorial infantry, the yeomanry regiments have a history rooted in the militia and volunteer tradition. The officers and men were part-time volunteers, although as the war progressed this distinction was blurred and eventually largely lost, and many saw action as dismounted foot soldiers. In 1918 some were formally converted into infantry or machine-gun units. Yeomanry regiments saw active service in the Western Front, Gallipoli, Egypt, Palestine and Salonika.
