August 1914 : in Chippenham. Part of the 1st South Western Mounted Brigade.

1915 : Squadrons split up.

RHQ and D Squadron attached to 38th (Welsh) Division and moved to France with them on 4 December 1915. Moved 2 April 1916 to 1st Cavalry Division, and on 1 May 1916 to III Corps Cavalry. Joined XV Corps Cavalry Regiment, with two Squadrons of South Irish Horse, on 21 May 1916.

A Squadron attached to 40th Division, and moved to France with them on 3 June 1916. Moved 21 June 1916 to IX Corps Cavalry Regiment, and on 19 November 1916 to XV Corps Cavalry Regiment.

B Squadron attached to 41st Division, and moved with them to France on 6 May 1916. Moved 1 June 1916 to 2nd Cavalry Division, and on 22 June 1916 to IX Corps Cavalry. Joined XV Corps Cavalry Regiment, with two Squadrons of South Irish Horse, on 25 November 1916.

3 September 1017: all units left XV Corps, dismounted and moved to No 3 Infantry Base Depot at Rouen.

26 September 1917 : personnel transferred to 6th (Service) Bn, the Wiltshire Regiment.

2/1st

Formed September 1914, and remained in UK throughout the war. In July 1916, converted into a Cyclist unit. Broken up in November 1916.

3/1st

Formed in 1915. Remained in United Kingdom until absorbed into 3rd Reserve Cavalary Regiment in early 1917.
